Biography of Ayobola Kekere-Ekun

Ayobola Kekere-Ekun (born in 1993) is a contemporary visual artist. She was born in Lagos, Nigeria. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in visual arts from the Department of Creative Arts at the University of Lagos, specializing in Graphic Design. Currently, she is pursuing a Ph.D. in Art and Design at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa.

Ayobola Kekere-Ekun’s work often explores themes related to gender, mythology, power, and the human condition in a layered manner; she creates artworks through a laborious process. Her work is heavily influenced by personal experiences and observations. She is particularly interested in exploring the subtle interaction of time, space, gender, power, and social structures in contemporary society.

Ayobola primarily works with a technique known as quilling, where strips of paper are individually shaped to create forms. She tends to employ quilling with a variety of materials that respond well to the technique, including ribbons and strips of canvas. She continually experiments with new ways to explore materials and their capabilities. Ayobola considers the intricate complexity of her work as a visual metaphor for the complexity of the themes she engages with.
